Window Shutters and Living Rooms

Adding window shutters to your Raleigh, NC home is a great way to increase style, insulation, privacy and light control in any room of the house, including the living room. Besides the kitchen, you probably spend the most time in the living room then almost any other room in the house! Therefore, you need to make sure that the space is just the way you want it to be, shutters included.

You shouldn’t choose shutters for your living room randomly. Since you spend a lot of time in your living room, your living room shutters should be just right. There are several factors you should consider when choosing window shutters for your living room:

  • Framing – Your shutter frames not only affect installation and use, but also style. For example, L-frame shutters are minimalist and subtle, and work best with windows that already have existing trim. On the other hand, Z-frame shutters, which are inside mount, are more decorative and can hide any gaps in the window frame if the window isn’t level or square.
  • Style – There really isn’t a right or wrong style for living room shutters, but full height shutters tend to be the most popular for living rooms. Full height shutters offer plenty of privacy and, when installed with a mid-rail, lots of control over the amount of light that gets into the home. You can also opt for café style shutters if you only want to block the lower half of the window, or tier on tier shutters if you’re going for even more customization.
  • Color – The color of your shutters is also very important as it will have a big impact in the style of your living room. As true with any room, neutral colored shutters are timeless and easy to match with almost any décor, furniture or flooring. Neutral shutters like bright white, grey, or beiges are great, as are stains like light brown or dark walnut. You could also go with a bolder shutter color if you want to add some flair or match an existing color scheme. Be sure to order sample colors before ordering the shutters themselves to make sure you like the color.
  • Material – For a living room, both wood and vinyl shutters would work. Be sure to get wood shutters that have been treated with layers of sealant and UV protectant to make sure they last for years to come in the face of heat, sun or water. You can also get vinyl shutters as they have water, heat, and light resistance built right in. Vinyl shutters are especially ideal in more humid climates as they don’t warp, fade or crack when exposed to humidity, condensation or moisture.
